Our youngest grandbaby is learning to sign. He turns 1 tomorrow. He does less crying out of frustration since he is able to get his needs met more accurately. I wish that this had been an acceptable option when my children were little. My sons language skills were a little slow in coming. Signing would have really enriched our experience with him as a young toddler.

How insightful you are. You have touched on the essential components for nurturing children, especially #'s 6 and 8. However, what the arts do not teach children is that once they become adults their experience of the arts will be filtered through the controls established by curators, critics, producers, conductors, directors, and of course the artists themselves. The child needs to know how to hang onto her own vision, her own experiences, and to value them . The arts do indeed traffic in subtleties, but in the adult world those nuances morph into judgements, what is good art, what is bad art. Only the insiders get to choose.
It's a big life lesson.

Bette,
The Young Rembrandts method of providing background information and building blocks for a solid foundation are the reasons why I thought the drawing curriuclum was so impressive.
As a former classroom teacher, it was critical to my students' success that they have knowledge of and experience with the internal "structure" of any area of study. If it was Math or Science or even Writing, the kids always did better once I, as the teacher, guided them through deciphering the hidden structure.
In order to be a good CREATIVE wirter, my students needed to know how to write a basic sentence. From there, we moved onto different sentence types and then onto paragraph structure. Students who mastered sentence structure then graduated to learning essay formats. All the while, the kids were learning how to write in their unique style (humorous, informative, story tellers, mystery writers, etc) If they did not master the internal structure of writing, it would be repetitive, incomplete or all over the place. It was also frustrating to read, to me and to them.
Young Rembrandts is about good teaching! Provide the foundation and their creativity will SOAR!!!
